Video iPod ad model

Apple's latest iPod, a video-enabled music player that serves up some of the season's hottest television shows without commercials, will likely prod advertisers to get serious about finding a foothold in portable media players, media buyers said.

Apple Computer Inc. (Nasdaq:AAPL - news) last week unveiled the new model in its popular iPod lineup. The company reached a deal to sell downloads of top-rated ABC network shows such as "Desperate Housewives" and "Lost" the day after broadcast for $1.99 per episode.

iPod video download service

Apple's introduction of a video playing iPod and a video download service is a smart move, according to industry experts polled by vnunet.com.

"This will offer Apple a way to test the waters for non-music video content, " said Susan Kevorkian, senior research analyst for consumer markets at IDC.

The company also won praise for offering over 2,000 music videos for sale through its iTunes music store.

At $1.99 per video, consumers will be inclined to buy the video instead of just the song, in order to have the option to watch the video, Kevorkian predicted. This should make them more accustomed with the iPod's video features.

Julie Ask, research director for telecoms and automotive at Jupiter Research, said: "It's still a great audio device and 'by the way, it does video too'. Even if people don't play video, Apple still wins. It still has 80 per cent market share in media devices."

Video iPod links

* Here's a Link to online video for the CNN Showbiz Tonight segment about the new device.

Content has been available for download for years and years. That content could be played on any number of devices, from computers to DVD players to PDAs. Being able to playback a video from the new Video Ipod just like you can play a song from a current IPod, certainly is not a technical marvel.

It is a business marvel. Bob Iger has gone contrary to what every current and previous TV network head has and would have done had Bob not turned the industry on its head with his announcement with Apple yesterday. Bob Iger has saved Network TV.

How ? By completely changing the economic model. [read full article]

Apple Video Ipod Reviews from NewsForge

Anonymous Reader writes "Speculation after speculation after speculation, we are finally seeing the video iPod from Apple. In addition to introducing the video iPod (which is simply known as the video-enabled iPod, there’s no special name for it), Apple also launched a corresponding version of iTunes called iTunes 6, which mainly supports music video and shows. Apple hasn’t touched the iPod in any other way except to work on the battery life; it has also added video playback capability and made it thin to maintain a sleek appeal, especially after the Nano release."

Video Ipod review and discussion

Of course, the video iPod isn't the only portable device capable of playing video - there are on-the-go DVD players and cell phones equipped to play video clips. And, if you have a Sony PlayStation Portable, you can get video downloads or watch movies on small discs.

Still, the latest trophy toy raises the question: Do we really need such technology?

Tiffany Nguyen says yes, most definitely.

The 18-year-old Sacramento State student came to Arden Fair mall's Apple Store to check out the iPod Nano; her boyfriend has one of the tiny MP3 players, and Nguyen wants one. News of the video iPod, however, has her rethinking her choices.

In particular, she likes the idea of watching TV when and where she wants.

"You could take (the video iPod) anywhere, on a road trip," said Nguyen, who says she watches about three hours of TV a day. "There aren't a lot of things out there that can do that - it really stands out."

Apple Computer today introduced hardware designed to help the company dominate a market that doesn't really exist yet: online video downloads. The company introduced its long-anticipated video iPod.
